To the staff:
The Los Angeles Times has won the General Excellence prize in the California Newspaper Publishers Assn.’s annual Better Newspapers contest.
“One of America’s finest newspapers,” the judges said of The Times, and that is a tribute to all of you: to your skill, dedication and unwavering commitment to excellence.
In addition to the general excellence prize, Times journalists won first-place honors in eight categories: for arts & entertainment coverage (staff), local government coverage (Paige St. John), education coverage (Teresa Watanabe), environmental reporting (Bettina Boxall), enterprise reporting (Alan Zarembo), writing (Joe Mozingo), editorial cartooning (David Horsey) and best website.
Our sister paper, the San Diego Union-Tribune, won four first-place awards: for business coverage, feature writing, feature photography and special section.
Congratulations to the staffs of both newspapers.
